What is Special about local flowers?

Did you know approximately 80% of cut flowers sold in the USA are imported from other countries? And of that remaining domestic 20%, about 80% are from California. Now don’t get me wrong, I believe cut flowers are wonderful no matter where they come from, and sometimes you need flowers in the dead of winter, on a whim, from the grocery store. That’s right, I buy carnations from Hannaford in January to put on my own dining table, so no judgment from me on how anyone gets their winter floral fix. All that being said though, there is nothing like the beauty of freshly cut, locally grown, seasonally appropriate flowers from a farm right here in Maine. Locally grown flowers are fresh, have a longer vase life than those that have been shipped across the country or internationally, and local farms are able to provide varieties that don’t ship well so aren’t seen in most grocery stores or major floral suppliers. Not needing to survive the rigors of long-distance travel also means the blooms don’t require chemical treatments often used on imports.

By using natural and sustainable growing practices, harvesting at the peak of freshness, and transporting minimal distances, we ensure your flowers are in prime condition upon arrival, so you get to enjoy them for as long as possible. Purchasing your blooms locally also means that money stays in the local economy, helping support a wide network of other small businesses here in Maine.

Farming of any type is tough business, and keeping our land, Waldo County, and Maine as a whole in agricultural production is a subject near and dear to my heart. The wonderful thing about farming flowers is that our end product is beauty, and the ability to share that beauty with our friends and neighbors. I think that our cows are beautiful too, but you can’t set a cow on your bed side table. So instead, let us share some home-grown flowers with you! Maine may have a relatively short growing season, but that is even more reason to make the most of it and bring home some enchanting local blooms while they are available.

And some day I am going to figure out how to get interesting, fragrant, high-quality carnations to grow in Maine. Just maybe not in January.

CSA Flower Subscriptions

CSA, short for Community Supported Agriculture, is a familiar concept in the vegetable world, but is also a great way to get a steady supply of beautiful locally grown flowers.  Our CSA shares give you a personal stake in the farm, first dibs on whatever is blooming in our fields and tunnel at the moment, and early access to events and specials. We offer subscriptions for individuals and businesses and either CSA type may be purchased as a gift.

Individual CSA Subscription

Getting a gorgeous, fresh, thoughtfully made bouquet on a regular basis is the perfect way to combat the daily pin pricks and stresses of modern existence. Flowers connect us to the natural world, remind us to appreciate the fleeting things in life, and offer us a chance to slow down and just look at something pretty, which is scientifically proven to be good for you (according to my own research at least).

So whether your house is a wreck thanks to children and pets, laundry is a mile high, or the dishes still aren’t doing themselves, give yourself, or a friend in need, the gift of a small piece of civilization and simple joy amongst the chaos.

Business CSA Subscription

Nothing draws people in and invites them to feel relaxed and content quite like fresh flowers.  Welcome customers and clients into your business with arrangements crafted to offer a cheerful, sophisticated, and natural ambiance. Flowers can encourage people to spend time browsing in shops and galleries, help calm anxious patients in medical offices, and encourage patrons to relax and linger over another cup of coffee.

Our business CSA arrangements are offered weekly to businesses in the Belfast, Bangor, and Waterville area.  Bouquets are larger and a bit more dramatic than our individual CSA, and are delivered in a vase.

Bespoke Bouquets

Individual, made to order flower arrangements. Give us a minimum of 48 hours notice, and we will specially prepare an arrangement for you or someone to whom you want to send a thoughtful gift. Fresh flowers from our growing fields, wrapped in tissue and floral paper, and hand tied with a ribbon.

There are an infinite number of reasons to need fresh cut flowers in your life. Flowers are the perfect expression of joy, sorrow, love, or simple everyday pleasure. Whatever your reason, we would love to share the beauty of local flowers with you.
